Is this really a text from HMRC?

This week a client of ours received what appeared to be a text from HMRC telling them that they were due a tax refund. It also asked for the client’s bank details!

STOP PRESS!: HMRC will never send an email, text message or phone call which:

· tells you about a tax rebate or penalty

· asks for your personal or payment information

Do not give out private information (such as bank details or passwords), reply to text messages, download attachments or click on any links in emails if you’re not sure they’re genuine. You should also report misleading websites, emails, phone numbers, phone calls or text messages you think may be suspicious.

This article from HMRC explains how to do this: https://www.gov.uk/report-suspicious-emails-websites-phishing
